Lives and works in Marrakech
A multidisciplinary artist, Mo Baala grew up in Taroudant. His artistic and creative education is deeply rooted in traditional Moroccan and African arts and crafts. His practice is also nourished by a sustained interest in philosophy, history, and literature. Early formative encounters with mentors played a pivotal role in shaping his artistic path—beginning in the vibrant markets of Taroudant, where he spent his youth. Later, his pursuit of knowledge led him to conduct extensive independent research online. His eclectic sources of inspiration foreshadow the diversity of his current body of work.
Free from rigid or academic frameworks, his practice moves fluidly across media.
Trained from a young age in craftsmanship, particularly leatherwork, his artistic journey has evolved over time. In his twenties, he began working on paper—creating drawings and collages—before extending his practice to leather and textiles. He then moved decisively toward painting on canvas, while developing a strong interest in site-specific installations, performance, and more recently, video art.
Since his emergence on the international art scene following his participation in the Marrakech Biennale in 2016, Mo Baala’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and presented at major international art events.
