Mustapha Azeroual French Moroccan, b. 1979

Born in Tours

Lives and works in Paris

Mustapha Azeroual is a self-taught Franco-Moroccan photographer. Trained as a scientist, his work is rooted in observation and experimentation, confronting historical photographic techniques—both in shooting and printing—with the contemporary challenges of the medium. By questioning tools, processes of image formation, and supports, the artist places the viewer’s perspective at the heart of his practice.

His work revolves around a critical analysis of the photographic medium and is structured around four main fields of inquiry: the study of light, the question of pattern, the investigation of how color is recorded and rendered, and the materiality of the photographic support. These areas of research have led to distinct bodies of work where each series becomes a space for experimentation.

A permanent resident at La Capsule, the photographic creation center in Le Bourget, Azeroual joined Fresh Winds in late 2015, part of the contemporary art biennial in Garður, Iceland. He is currently developing ELLIOS, a study of light in collaboration with LESIA, the solar observation division of the Paris-Meudon Observatory.

In January 2024, alongside curator Marjolaine Lévy, Mustapha Azeroual was awarded the BMW ART MAKERS Prize, dedicated to visual arts and contemporary imagery. Their project The Green Ray was unanimously selected by the jury.

Mustapha Azeroual is represented by Galerie Binôme in Paris (France) and MCC Gallery in Marrakech (Morocco), with whom he garnered significant attention during 1-54 London.
